How traditional metal braces work.

Misaligned teeth cause many problems, including difficulty speaking and chewing and TMJ disorder. Additionally, misaligned teeth create “tight spots” that aren’t easily accessible by the toothbrush. Poorly cleaned teeth put you at risk of cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and other oral problems.

Traditional braces have been the go-to orthodontic procedure for over 100 years because they are affordable and effective.

But how do they work? Metal braces have brackets bonded on your teeth with a wire that runs through the brackets. Like clear aligner therapy, metal braces apply constant pressure on your teeth to move them into the desired position.
Patients using traditional braces must see a dentist every four to six weeks. During these follow-up visits, we check the progress of your treatment, adjust, and replace your wires to move your teeth closer to perfection.

Who needs traditional metal braces?

Traditional braces are ideal for both children and adults. Although orthodontic treatments work best in children since their jaws are still growing, metal braces are up to the task of treating complex adult orthodontic cases.

Most patients are ideal candidates for metal braces as long as they have healthy teeth and gums.

The common orthodontic issues that traditional braces can resolve include:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Underbite
  • Tooth rotation
  • Overbite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Open bite
  • Crossbite

Modern traditional braces have evolved to straighten your smile without making you feel insecure. We use tooth-colored wires and ceramic brackets to make your treatment less conspicuous. Additionally, self-ligating braces have revolutionized metal braces orthodontics.

These braces are similar to traditional braces but have one notable exception: the elastic ligature. Instead of elastic bands, self-ligating braces use special clips to secure the archwire. This clip gives your teeth greater freedom of movement, resulting in comfortable treatment and fewer dental visits to adjust wires.
